Le jour de la Saint-Valentin, le 14 février, est considéré dans de nombreux pays comme la fête des amoureux. Les couples en profitent pour échanger des mots doux et des cadeaux comme preuves d'amour ainsi que des roses rouges qui sont l'emblème de la passion.
À l'origine fête de l'Église catholique, le jour de la Saint-Valentin n'aurait pas été associé avec l'amour romantique avant le haut Moyen Âge. La fête est maintenant associée plus étroitement à l'échange mutuel de « billets doux » ou de valentins illustrés de symboles tels qu'un cœur ou un Cupidon ailé.
À l'envoi de billets au XIXe siècle a succédé l'échange de cartes de vœux. On estime qu'environ un milliard de ces cartes sont expédiées chaque année à l'occasion de la Saint Valentin, chiffre battu seulement par le nombre de cartes échangées lors des fêtes de Noël. On estime aussi que 85% de ces cartes sont achetées par des femmes.
Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine's cards, or gifting candy. It is very common to present flowers on Valentine's Day. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.[1] The mid-nineteenth century Valentine's Day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the United States to follow.[2] The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

ตำนานวันแห่งความรัก 14 ก.พ. เริ่มขึ้นเมื่อ ค.ศ.270 ชาวคริสเตียนผู้หนึ่งนามว่า “วาเลนไทน์” ถูกคุมขังเพราะไม่ยอมนับถือเทพเจ้าตามจักรพรรดิแห่งอาณาจักรโรมัน โดยวาเลนไทน์ได้นำอาหารไปวางบนประตูบ้านคนยากจน พร้อมกับเปิดตัวว่าเป็นคริสเตียน
ช่วงที่วาเลนไทน์ถูกคุมขังในเรือนจำก็ได้หลงรักลูกสาวของผู้คุมที่ตาบอด วาเลนไทน์ได้อธิษฐานทูลขออำนาจจากพระเจ้าให้รักษาตาของเธอจนหายเป็นปกติ ทำให้ครอบครัวผู้คุมประกาศตนเป็นคริสเตียน เมื่อจักรพรรดิคลอดิอุสที่ 2 แห่งโรมทรงทราบ จึงโกรธมากและสั่งให้นำตัวเซนต์ วาเลนไทน์ไปโบยตีและตัดศีรษะ ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์
ในค่ำคืนก่อนวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ วาเลนไทน์ได้ส่งบทกวีแห่งความรักไปให้หญิงสาวในดวงใจ และลงท้ายด้วยถ้อยคำพรรณนานี้ว่า “FROM YOUR VALENTINE”
ต่อมาในสมัยจักรพรรดิคอนสแตนติน ทรงรับศาสนาคริสต์เป็นศาสนาประจำชาติ ในวันที่ 15 กุมภาพันธ์ ถัดจากวันที่เซนต์วาเลนไทน์ถูกประหาร 1 วัน ซึ่งถือเป็นวันพิธี “ลูเพอร์กาเลีย” ซึ่งเป็นพิธีทางศาสนาของโรมันที่เปิดโอกาสให้หนุ่มสาวเลือกคู่กัน จึงให้รวมทั้งสองวันเอาไว้ด้วยกัน เรียกว่า “วันวาเลนไทน์” นับแต่นั้นมา เพื่อระลึกถึงนักบุญวาเลนไทน์ ที่มีความรักและศรัทธาต่อศาสนาที่ตนนับถือ
ตำนานวาเลนไทน์จึงเริ่มต้นตั้งแต่นั้นมา เชื่อกันว่าในวันวาเลนไทน์ มวลหมู่นกจะพากันจับคู่ บรรดาหนุ่มสาว จะเปิดเผยความในใจซึ่งกันและกัน และแลกเปลี่ยนของที่ระลึกสื่อความรัก ในยามค่ำคืนแห่งการฉลองเทศกาล โดยช่วงสมัยพระนางเจ้าวิกตอเรีย สาวๆมักนิยมสวมสร้อยข้อมือ ซึ่งถือเป็นเครื่องหมายแห่งความโชคดีในความรัก โดยเฉพาะถ้าสร้อยข้อมือเหล่านี้ทำเป็นรูป หมู ตะเกียง เกือกม้า และหัวใจ ตราบจนทุกวันนี้ เครื่องรางรูปหัวใจก็ยังเป็นที่นิยมในหมู่สาวๆ
การให้ของขวัญวันวาเลนไทน์ ก็พัฒนามาเรื่อยๆ แต่ส่วนใหญ่จะยืนด้วยรูปหัวใจ หรือดอกกุหลาบ ช็อกโกแลตที่สื่อถึงความหวานทั้งสิ้น
สำหรับคำหวานที่จะบอกรักใครสักคนนั้น กลับไปดูต้นฉบับของนักบุญวาเลนไทน์แล้ว ท่านเขียนไว้ว่า “รักคือการยินดีที่ได้เห็นบุคคลที่รักมีความสุข แม้ว่าตนเองจะทุกข์ หรือเจ็บปวดเพียงใดก็ตาม”
ส่งดอกไม้วันวาเลนไทน์
มนุษย์ได้ใช้ดอกไม้เป็นสื่อในการแสดงความรักต่อกันมานานแล้ว เราอาจจะคิดว่าดอกไม้เป็นสิ่งที่สามารถใช้สื่อความหมายเฉพาะความรักของหนุ่มสาวเท่านั้น แต่แท้จริงแล้วดอกไม้แต่ละชนิดสามารถสื่อความรักได้หลายรูปแบบ ทั้งยังไม่จำกัดอายุและเพศอีกด้วย
กุหลาบแดง (Red Rose) : จะใช้ในความหมายแทน ประโยคที่ว่า "ฉันรักเธอ" I love Selarath,Sithy
กุหลาบขาว (White Rose) : กุหลาบขาวแทนความหมายแห่งความรักอันบริสุทธิ์
กุหลาบชมพู (Pink Rose) : มักถูกใช้แทนความรักแบบโรแมนติก และความเสน่หาต่อกัน
กุหลาบเหลือง (Yellow Rose) : สีเหลืองเป็นสีแห่งความสดใส แทนความรักแบบเพื่อน
